When you create an account, we collect:

1.2 Camera & Photos Access
With your explicit permission, we access:
- Camera: To scan documents, capture text, and take photos for translation
- Photo Library: To select existing photos for scanning and translation
Note: We only access photos you explicitly select. We do not scan or upload your entire photo library.
1.3 Image & Text Data
When you use scanning or translation features:
- Images you capture or select (processed temporarily)
- Text extracted from images via Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
- Mathematical equations recognized from images
- Translated text in your chosen language
- Translated images you choose to download to your device
1.4 Chat & AI Data
- Your chat questions and AI responses
- Chat context for conversation continuity (previous questions and answers)
- Important messages you choose to save
- Selected AI mode (Study, General, Literature, or Chat)
- Sub-chat follow-up conversations
1.5 Subscription Information
- Purchase history via Apple App Store
- Subscription status and expiration dates
- Trial usage information (number of free chats remaining)
2. How We Use Your Information
- To provide scanning, translation, and AI chat functionality
- To process images and extract text using OCR technology
- To recognize mathematical equations and convert them to text
- To generate translated versions of images with text overlay
- To generate AI responses to your questions
- To maintain chat context for more coherent conversations
- To process subscriptions and verify purchase status
- To prevent subscription fraud and enforce trial limits
- To send password reset emails when requested

3. Data Processing & Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services to provide our App's functionality:
3.1 Firebase (Google)
We use Firebase for:
- Authentication (sign-in services)
- Cloud Firestore (data storage for chats, saved messages, and account information)
- Cloud Functions (server-side processing for subscriptions and AI requests)
- App Check (security verification)

3.2 DeepSeek AI
We use DeepSeek API (deepseek.com) to generate AI responses to your questions. When you use the chat features, the following information is transmitted to DeepSeek:
- Your question text
- Previous chat context (for conversation continuity)
- Selected AI mode (Study, General, Literature, or Chat)
- Image text for translation features
DeepSeek does NOT receive: your email address, user ID, subscription status, device information, or any personal identifiers.

3.3 Apple Vision & Google Gemini AI
For scanning features, we use:
- General Scan: Uses Apple's VisionKit framework for on-device text recognition (OCR). All processing occurs locally on your device. No images or text are sent to Apple's servers.
- Math Scan: Uses Google's Gemini AI API (gemini-2.5-flash-lite) to recognize mathematical equations and convert them to LaTeX format. Images captured in Math Scan mode are transmitted to Google's servers for processing.

3.4 Apple App Store
For subscription purchases and management, we use Apple's in-app purchase system. Apple processes payments according to their privacy policy: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
3.5 Google Sign-In
If you choose to sign in with Google, Google receives basic profile information (your name and email address) according to their privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
3.6 Apple Sign-In

4. Data Retention & Deletion
4.1 Image Data
- General Scan images: Processed entirely on your device and never uploaded to our servers
- Math Scan images: Transmitted to Google Gemini for processing; we do not store these images permanently
- Translation images: Processed temporarily and not stored permanently on our servers
- Translated images: Stored only if you choose to download them to your device's photo library
- We do not maintain a permanent copy of your images on our servers
4.2 Chat Data
- Chat history is stored in your account for your reference
- Chat context (up to 10 recent messages) is temporarily stored to maintain conversation continuity
- Important messages you save remain until you delete them
4.3 Account Data
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time by:
- Opening the QuestrAI app
- Going to the menu → Profile → Delete Account
- Confirming your password (for email/password accounts)
Upon account deletion:
- All chat history is permanently deleted
- All saved important messages are permanently deleted
- All chat context is permanently deleted
- Your user account is removed from our authentication system
- Trial usage records are retained in anonymized form to prevent abuse
4.4 Trial Usage Data
To prevent abuse of our free trial system, we retain an anonymized record of trial usage (hashed email identifier and number of chats used) even after account deletion. This record cannot be used to identify you personally.
5. Your Rights & Choices
- Camera Access: You can enable or disable camera access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy → Camera
- Photo Library Access: You can manage photo access in iOS Settings → Privacy → Photos
- Data Access: View your chat history and saved messages within the app
- Data Deletion: Delete individual chats, saved messages, or your entire account at any time
- Data Export: Contact us to request an export of your data
- Marketing Communications: We do not send marketing emails
6. Children's Privacy
Our App is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.
7. Security Measures
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data:
- All data transmission is encrypted using SSL/TLS
- Secure Firebase authentication with token-based sessions
- Firebase App Check to prevent unauthorized API access
- Images are processed temporarily and not stored long-term on our servers
- Trial usage data is stored using one-way hashed email identifiers (SHA-256)
- Regular security reviews and updates
8. International Data Transfers
Your data may be transferred to and processed in countries where our third-party service providers operate, including the United States (Firebase/Google, DeepSeek). We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place through standard contractual clauses and service provider agreements.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by:
- Updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy
- Displaying an in-app notification for significant changes
Your continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
